Thuma Bed Frame Review 2024

Thuma is a company focused on creating well-made and stylish products for modern living. They sell mattresses, clothing, and other accessories, but their most famous item is their bed frame called “The Bed.” It’s popular because of its elegant, high-quality design using Japanese joinery and the company’s promise of easy assembly. But is it the right bed frame for you? In this article, I will provide you with a brief review and will discuss its design, setup, and how supportive it is.

Overview of Thuma Bed Frame

Thuma is a popular new brand known for its mattresses and bedding, gaining attention on Instagram. They offer various products to make your bedroom stylish, including mattresses, nightstands, side tables, and candles.

However, their most well-known product is called The Bed. The Bed stands out with its high-quality materials and sleek Japanese design, meant to elevate your bedroom without needing any tools for assembly. In my experience, the Thuma Bed is easy to build and has a modern, attractive look. However, it might be better suited for certain types of sleepers.

Do You Need a Bed Frame?

First, what exactly is a platform bed frame, and how do you know if you need one? Platform beds are popular for their simple, modern design. They sit low to the ground and don’t need a boxspring.

They come in various styles for support, with the Thuma bed using slats to support the mattress. All mattresses (foam, innerspring, and hybrid) can be used with a platform bed frame. Anyone wanting a sturdy base and extra support for their mattress could benefit from one.

Who Should Buy the Thuma Bed Frame?

  • Noise-Sensitive Sleepers: The frame’s design minimizes noise, thanks to its sturdy construction and non-creaky joints. This makes it ideal for light sleepers who are easily disturbed by bed frame noises.

Who Might Not Need the Thuma Bed Frame

  • Budget-Conscious Shoppers: The Thuma Bed Frame is priced higher than some other bed frames on the market. Those looking for the most economical option might find it outside their budget.
  • Traditional Style Enthusiasts: The minimalist and modern design of the Thuma Bed Frame might not appeal to those who prefer more traditional or ornate bedroom furniture styles.
  • Tool-Loving DIYers: While the Thuma Bed Frame’s tool-free assembly is a selling point for many, those who enjoy the process of building and customizing their furniture with tools might not find it as satisfying.
  • Users Needing Extra Storage: The Thuma Bed Frame has a minimalistic design with limited storage options. Those who need under-bed storage or additional built-in storage solutions might find it lacking in this area.
  • Heavier Individuals: Although the Thuma Bed Frame is sturdy, individuals who require a bed frame with a very high weight capacity might need to verify if it meets their specific requirements.

Thuma The Bed Construction

The Thuma Bed frame is crafted from repurposed wood, giving each piece unique grain patterns and slight imperfections, ensuring no two Thuma Beds are alike. This adds to its rustic charm. The legs are made from the same repurposed rubberwood and have cork padding on the bottom to prevent floor catches when moving or repositioning the bed.

The frame and legs are connected using a unique Japanese joinery technique. The long side, short side, and leg fit together like puzzle pieces, requiring no screws or screwdrivers. This method adds durability, ensuring the bed won’t fall apart or weaken at the joints.

The double-strength slats are spaced 3 inches apart, providing a balance of support and breathability. They are held together by eco-felt material, and notches at the top and bottom of the frame keep the slats securely in place.

You can choose between a headboard or a pillow board. The headboard matches the wood of the bed, while the pillow board is made of foam and covered with light polyester linen.

I tested the pillow board, and it gives the bed a soft, cozy look. Just keep in mind that the pillow board doesn’t attach to the bed and is held in place by your mattress.

You can also pick from three colors: Walnut, Natural, and Espresso. Plus, the Bed is GREENGUARD Gold Certified, which means it meets high standards for being eco-friendly and organic.

How To Assemble The Thuma Bed Frame?

The Thuma arrived in three separate, numbered boxes. Before seeing the instruction manual, I noticed that Box 1 had a label saying ‘Open First.’ I was clear from the start that they were going to guide me through the process.

Inside Box 1, I found the long and short pieces of the bed frame. The instructions instructed me to lay these pieces out where I wanted the bed and then set out the legs.

I was worried that putting the pieces together would be the tricky part. The short sides, long sides, and legs all had grooves. With our coworker’s help, we fitted the grooves of the long side, short side, and leg together, corner by corner.

There was some resistance, but once everything was in place, the corner felt like one solid, sturdy piece of wood.

Once the mainframe was assembled, I attached the final leg to the center beam and placed it into the frame, Although the bed does not use metal screws, it includes two plastic pegs. These pegs screw into the head and foot of the frame, holding the center beam in place.

Next, I placed the wooden slats across the bed. The Thuma bed has useful notches at the head and foot that fit with the slats, keeping them tight and evenly spaced.

The final step was adding the Thuma pillowboard. I was surprised to see that it just rested against the wall and didn’t attach to the bed. The brand says the weight of your mattress will keep the pillowboard in place.

I’ve described the process in detail, but it took less than 10 minutes to complete. I was genuinely impressed by how easy it was to put together. However, I recommend getting a friend to help, as the heavy wood and tricky corners are easier to manage with assistance.

Warranty

Thuma also provides a lifetime warranty for the bed frame, which covers any defects in materials or workmanship. This warranty reflects the company’s confidence in the quality and durability of their product and offers peace of mind for customers. The lifetime warranty ensures that you are protected against any issues that may arise, and Thuma’s responsive customer service team is available to assist with any concerns.

Compatibility of Thuma Mattress

A platform bed frame’s quality depends on its support. Thuma offers a slim memory foam mattress, but I wanted to test the Thuma Bed with a heavier mattress to see how well it holds up.

I used the Avocado Green mattress, one of the heaviest mattresses I reviewed. I thought if the Thuma could support the Avocado, it could support any mattress.

After placing the Avocado on the Thuma, I tested it in all three sleeping positions. Whether I lay on my back, side, or stomach, I didn’t feel any sagging in the bed frame. If the Avocado lacked support, I would have felt some dips in the mattress.

I also sat near the edge and jumped up and down. The bed didn’t make any squeaks or groans, which was impressive since I weighed 270 lbs.

To be thorough, I also tested the Thuma with a hybrid, innerspring, and memory foam mattress. As expected, the Thuma supported these mattresses and me without any problems.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Thuma Bed Frame is a standout choice for modern living, thanks to its sleek design, easy assembly, and sustainable materials. Its durable construction and noise-free performance make it ideal for minimalists, eco-conscious consumers, and those in need of a hassle-free setup. While it may not suit budget-conscious shoppers or those needing extra storage, the 100-night trial and lifetime warranty ensure it’s a reliable investment. Overall, the Thuma Bed Frame offers a stylish and functional solution for various bedroom needs.
