On 10th July, National Pizza Day is celebrated in Brazil. Did you know that Sao Paulo is Brazil’s pizza capital because a section of its population is of Italian descent. The ‘oriundi,’ or Italian descendants, in Brazil number around 25 million, and an estimated 10 million live in Sao Paulo.

Currently, More than 25 Million Pizzas are eaten every month in Sao Paulo. July 10th is a day when people indulge in their favourite pizza varieties, whether traditional or creative and share their love for this beloved dish with family and friends.

HISTORY OF NATIONAL PIZZA DAY IN BRAZIL

The most popular fast food in the world is Pizza. In a year, the average person consumes more than 23 lbs of pizza in the U.S. alone. Pizzas are the staple food in Brazil. Pizza can be described as a hin wheat cake scattered with mushrooms and herbs.

Vendors hawked pizza in the streets, carried them in large boxes and cut slices according to the customer’s needs.

These pizzas were made with garlic, salt, lard, tomatoes, and basil. Food critics scorned pizza, viewing it as peasant food.

In 1889, it was changed when Queen Margherita of Italy ate a pizza made with basil, mozzarella, and tomatoes. She liked it so much that it was named ‘Pizza Margherita.’

In the years 1870-1920, Pizza was discovered for the first time in Brazil when the influx of Italian immigrants was at its peak.

Besides this, many of these immigrants settled in Sao Paulo, working on the coffee plantations. Since the day, Sao Paulo celebrates National Pizza Day on July 10.
